Poco prima delle 16, l’aereo Alitalia con a bordo il Papa è atterrato alla Andrews Air Force Base di Washington. Il Pontefice aveva lasciato Cuba alle 12.30 dopo la cerimonia di congedo svoltasi all’aeroporto internazionale di Santiago. A salutarlo c’erano il presidente Raúl Castro, autorità civili, i vescovi dell’isola e un gruppo di fedeli. Durante il viaggio Francesco ha fatto pervenire i seguenti telegrammi alle più alte autorità dei Paesi sorvolati.
