The Ecclesial and Ecumenical Implications of the Apostolic Constitution
Anglicanorum coetibus
Pontifical Gregorian University
Rome, Italy, October 15, 2019
On October 15, 2019 a Symposium will be held in the Aula Magna at the Pontifical Gregorian University to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the Apostolic Constitution Anglicanorum coetibus, promulgated by Pope Benedict XVI in 2009. The event is being co-sponsored by the Faculty of Canon Law of the Pontifical Gregorian University and the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.
Ten years have passed since the promulgation of the Apostolic Constitution and its Complementary Norms. In light of this experience, the Symposium will bring together experts in theology, canon law, and liturgy, who will offer academic reflections so as to make the rich content of these documents, and practical developments based on them, more widely known to the universal Church. The Ordinaries of each of the three Personal Ordinariates will be present and will describe the successes and challenges that have surfaced in this first decade.
His Eminence Cardinal Luis F. Ladaria, S.J., Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, will introduce the Symposium at 9:15. The Morning Session, which will include time for questions and discussion, will be moderated by Fr. Ulrich Rhode, S.J., Dean of the Faculty of Canon Law at the Pontifical Gregorian University. At 9:30, Archbishop Augustine DiNoia, O.P, the Adjunct Secretary of the CDF will address the historical context of the development of Anglicanorum coetibus. At 11:00 am, Fr. Gianfranco Ghirlanda, S.J., Professor Emeritus of the Pontifical Gregorian University and Consultor for the CDF, will address the canonical elements of the Apostolic Constitution and the Complementary Norms.
The Afternoon Session will be moderated by Rev. Walter R. Oxley, Official of the CDF. At 13:30, Univ.-Prof. Dr. Hans Jürgen Feulner, Lic. Theol., University of Vienna, will address the liturgical provisions for the Personal Ordinariates. At 14:30, Rev. Msgr. Mark Langham, Catholic Chaplain, University of Cambridge, will address the ecumenical implications of Anglicanorum coetibus. The Symposium will conclude with a panel discussion at 16:00, with the Most Reverend Steven J. Lopes, Ordinary of the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of Saint Peter in North America; Msgr. Keith Newton, Ordinary of the Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham in Great Britain; and Msgr. Carl Reid, Ordinary of the Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of the Southern Cross in Australia. The Symposium will conclude at 17:30.
